Jean Seberg, Philippe Garrel et Les Hautes solitudes is composed of excerpts from four of my films about Philippe Garrel which concern his silent masterpiece Les Hautes solitudes (1974) and its protagonist, the icon of the New Wave, Jean Seberg.

With exclusive access to Britain's renowned Academy of Contemporary Music, this rockumentary follows students over the first term of the academic year as they follow their dream of making it big in the hard-to-break music business. First-year gospel singer Henrietta wants to be a chart-topping superstar, but struggles to shine in a class of talented vocalists. 19-year-old Ella is striving to develop her own musical style and stand out from the crowd. Trainee producer James has returned to college after being burnt by the music industry and, for hotly tipped college band Massmatiks, this year is all about getting their first record deal. Pampered Frederic "Freddy" Pritchard, warned by his father that he must work or be disinherited, learns how to crack safes to help his girlfriend Gloria Nevins, whose villainous uncle holds security for the family jewels, as well as the right to vote on the disposition of the Nevins Motor Works. After Freddy steals the papers with the aid of his valet Smithson, Gloria's uncle locks him in a warehouse to prevent him from attending a crucial stockholders' meeting. Freddy escapes and saves the factory for Mrs. Nevins, who gives him power of proxy. Pritchard, Sr., pleased with his son, consents to Freddy's marriage to Gloria.

Foreign intelligence agent Mirsayid, captured by Soviet border guards, is sentenced by a court to a maximum security prison. He manages to conceal the location of the cache where the map is stored. Soon, new agents, Loinab and Guliam, successfully cross the border. Their goal is simple: to visit Mirsayid in the colony, find out the location of the cache, and retrieve the hidden map. The Chekists give them complete freedom of action for the time being.

In an associative montage statues of saints in rigid and rapt poses are crosscut with those of real actors until the two can no longer be told apart. Gradually the real bodies break away from the constraints of their wooden models through increasingly improvised dance. A successful act of liberation from convention, which the material celebrates in an ecstasy of multiple exposures and psychedelic colors. – Maya McKechneay
